I’m really excited to share an update and introduce a new project: Green New Deal Housing (aka GNDH).
In brief, Green New Deal Housing is a nonprofit community housing organization. More broadly, GNDH exists to offer a widespread and equitable approach to housing development and participation in the new green economy; contributing to community resilience and stability. We plan to build affordable zero-net-energy homes and deliver job training in green construction. We hope the organization provides a model that can have a scalable impact on climate change and economic justice. You can read more at the Green New Deal Housing website, which just launched, or download this one-sheet introduction.
Last month, the University of Minnesota invited me to speak about the work of Green New Deal Housing for a webinar, called Green Homes and Homelessness: The Challenge of Equitable and Sustainable Housing in 2020. You can watch the whole thing here—my talk begins at 30:42.
I am a co-founder and board member of Green New Deal Housing, and I’ve been working on GNDH projects alongside my through design work. Though GNDH is a separate organization distinct from through design, it came about specifically because of my interests in housing justice and education, and I am proud to be using my expertise and experience as an architect and designer to create the designs for Green New Deal Homes. There is no single solution to the housing crisis (or the climate crisis) we face, but Green New Deal Housing will provide one and—most importantly—will do so in a way that’s equitable, accessible, and sustainable.
