In less than 15 minutes, you can see a vision for what all new housing and house-building can and should be: healthy, durable, fossil-fuel free, and available to everyone. Housing is a basic need.
The hurdles to making this kind of housing the rule instead of the exception are many, but they are not technical. They are not exactly economic, although the United States’ commodification of housing is indeed a hurdle. The U.S. has commodified many basic needs. The more we understand this, and more we organize to rectify this, the closer we will be to a society that provides for its citizens and pursues community and the common good over exploitation and profit.
We worked with nonprofit Green New Deal Housing and videographer Life with Vigor to tell the story of the Evergreen Pilot Project. You can watch it here, then imagine if this were the approach to all new housing development.
